Every Independence Day, Breckenridge comes alive with patriotism, parties and the annual Main Street Parade. It’s a day of celebration that includes athletic competitions, live music, art festivals, family activities and a few of our favorite small-town traditions. Finish July 4th with a performance by the National Repertory Orchestra that’s not to be missed!
Independence Day Celebration will adhere to all public health and safety regulations required for Colorado.
Colorado’s low humidity has its perks, but can also can create dry conditions. In January 2019, The Town of Breckenridge Town Council passed an indefinite ban on public and private fireworks, regardless of the current weather trends, to align with safe environmental practices. The Town of Breckenridge places the highest value on safety and thanks guests in advance for refraining from using fireworks within Breckenridge. Summit County officials and residents take wildfires very seriously; fireworks of any kind are prohibited within town limits.

Town officials strongly recommend leaving furry friends at home for their own safety and comfort as downtown is expected to be busy on July 4th.
Breckenridge is one of the few Colorado mountain communities that is hosting an Independence Day Parade. Main Street will be closed starting at 6:00am and town is expected to be busy. If you’re in town, plan on walking, biking or riding the Breckenridge Free Ride bus whenever possible and try to be wherever you plan to celebrate by 9:00am on Sunday, July 4. Your rental company can give you tips on the easiest way to reach Main Street from your lodging location.
For anyone coming into town, event parking is FREE at Airport Road parking lots. A shuttle will be running from 8:00am to 6:00pm on a loop into downtown every 20 minutes from Airport Road lot to the Transit Center. Masks are still required on public transportation in Summit County at this time. Breckenridge’s downtown parking lots are paid and traditionally fill up fast, so guests should plan to arrive early and park in the same spot for the day.
After 6:00pm, guests can return to their car by way of the Grey Bus Route. Myfreeride.com allows you to find nearby bus stops and track bus locations in real time.
Once you’re here, it’s easy to get around Breckenridge without a car. The Breckenridge Free Ride offers free bus transportation throughout the day with multiple shuttle systems running throughout Breckenridge. Most likely, the place you are staying is right next to a bus stop or offers its own FREE shuttle transportation to town. Due to the closure of Main Street, the Breckenridge Trolley will not run on Independence Day.
What is different this year?
While attending the parade or any busy event should be up to every persons individual comfort level, parade barricades are being moved into the street to create an expanded viewing area. Out of abundance of caution, smaller amusements that have traditionally been hosted in the past (pony rides, Red White and Blue water fight and face painting stations) are not taking place this year. Additionally, a portion of Main Street will be remain closed between Ski Hill and Adams Ave. until 6 p.m. to allow for extra distance between activities throughout the downtown corridor – the rest of Main Street will be opened back up immediately following the parade.
Are town officials concerned about COVID-19?
Summit County has recently reached the goal of 70% of community fully vaccinated. Under public health recommendations, Breckenridge Town Council felt like it was time to bring the community together to celebrate with one our iconic events.
